Become a volunteer parent
recruiter for the
Admissions Office
*Attend college fairs:
Held in both the fall and the spring, parent
volunteers represent Mason at local college nights. These are usually
targeted to high school juniors and seniors, but you also see guidance
counselors and parents. The fairs are generally held in the evening (7 to
9pm) at a local high school or civic center. We receive invitations to
these fairs months in advance you can out them on your calendar. We send
you training materials, handouts, table banners, and such. Most
students ask general questions that you should be able to answer easily.
This is the best time to talk about your positive experiences at Mason and
encourage the students to visit campus.
*Call or write to students: The Admissions
Office wants to make as many personal contacts with a student as possible.
We have alumni, student, and parent volunteers call, write, and e-mail students
to share their experiences, talk about majors, and offer congratulations on
admissions or a scholarship offer.
*Drop off material at high
schools: Even if you only have a little time, we would be happy to
have you share our admissions materials with as many high schools as possible.
We send you the materials and a poster or pennant for you to drop off at a local
high school guidance office or career center.
*Host or
attend an admitted student reception: Each march and April, alumni
and parent volunteers help host receptions for admitted students and their
families. These can be done at your home or at a local restaurant.
This is an excellent way to talk with families about Mason, Fairfax, and the
Washington, D.C., area. Most of these students are trying to make their
final decisions and tell us that this type of event is extremely helpful.
