Parent Access to Student Records: FERPA
George Mason University is bound the Family Educational Rights and Privacy of 1974 (FERPA), as amended.  This law ensures that privacy rights concerning student academic records belong to the parents of legal guardian through the child's high school years.  Once the student enrolls at the university, the privacy rights are given to the student and no longer belong to the parent, no matter who may be paying the student's tuition.   The university expects your son or daughter to take full responsibility for his or her education, including the academic policies described in the University Catalog or Schedule of Classes.  Because of FERPA, your access to your child's academic records is limited to those documents that he or she shares with you.

Having said this, it may be helpful in discussions with your son or daughter to have an understanding of George Mason's academic policy.
