Question #1: My daughter is a new freshman student who will be entering Mason in Fall 2005. Does she need to attend an Orientation?  If so, when are the orientation dates and when can I make a reservation?

Answer: Yes, all new students are required to attend an Orientation. Since your student is a freshman, they will need to make a reservation to attend a Freshman Orientation program.  The dates for Freshman Orientation are:

June 20-21
June 23-24
June 27-28
July 11-12
July 14-15

Question #2: What are some things my student should bring when they move onto campus? 

Answer:

pictures of family and friends alarm clock
laundry bag hair stuff (shampoo, etc.)
toothbrush & toothpaste hair brush & comb
extra towels and washcloths soap
cleaning supplies storage bins (organizers)
favorite stuffed animal shower shoes (flip flops)
picture ID car insurance information

iron bedding (blankets, comforter, etc.)

NOTE: It's a good idea that to coordinate what you are bringing with your new roommate so you don't bring some of the same larger items

Question #3: Is there an honors program that has office hours during the summer?

Answer: It would be best for you to contact Robert Clark (Director) or Rosemary Jann (Associate Director) with the Honors Program in General Education directly at 703-993-1110 to see the hours of availability during the summer.  For more information about the Honors Program in General Education, visit their website at: http://honors.gmu.edu/


Question #4: Is there a particular tour of the university that would be helpful?

Answer: The Admissions Office offers campus tours as well as information sessions.  If you'd like to schedule a time to tour our campus and take part in an information session, visit their website at: http://admissions.gmu.edu/ugrad/info.html


Question #5: How can my student purchase a computer on campus?

Answer: Patriot Computers is Mason's very own computer store on campus.  If you or your student is interested in purchasing a computer, please visit their website at http://compstore.gmu.edu/ to check out their package deals. 


Question #6: How can my student purchase textbooks for class?

Answer: The University Bookstore has a website that allows for students to search online for the textbooks.  For more information or to purchase textbooks, please visit their website at: http://gmu.bkstore.com/


Question #7:  Where can my student go to get information about choosing a major or career?

Answer: The Academic Advising Center and Career Services are two offices that can help. Undeclared students are advised in the Academic Advising Center. Academic Advising also assists students who are considering changing their majors and pre-health professional students. If you have declared a major, you are advised in that academic department. University Career Services can guide you through the process of exploring your major/career options. Meet with a career counselor for help with deciding on or confirming your choice of a major. Also visit Career Services’ website about  exploring careers and majors.  

 *Students who are considering one of the majors in the School of Management and need help choosing a major should check out the School of Management's Office of Career Services.


Question #8:  Where can I find a list of nearby storage facilitates? My son lives on campus and we live in California and are unable to pack all his belongings up and ship them home.  Are there places near the campus that we can contact to store his stuff?
