Family Weekend spotlight: Mason on Location Area Tours

September 17, 2019 | Filed under: Mason Family Flash

Family Weekend events are designed to give your family a glimpse into your student’s life at Mason, including events both on and off campus. In order to give you a taste of some of the unique experiences that Mason’s close proximity to Washington, D.C., we have organized a number of tours to various area attractions. Whether your family is interested in seeing the National Mall, learning more about the home of our university’s namesake, exploring the local Fairfax history, or enjoying a hike outdoors, there is something for everyone!

D.C. Bus Tour
The Washington, D.C. bus tour is a must for those interested in sightseeing and learning more about the nation’s capital. The tour will take participants all around the monuments and special landmarks of D.C. and will make one stop where participants can hop off the bus and explore the monuments by foot.

Great Falls
Great Falls is one of Northern Virginia’s most popular hiking destinations. With over 800 acres of land just 15 miles from the Nation’s Capital, the park is filled with rich history and beautiful landscapes. No matter your skill level, families can enjoy a short hike guided by staff and students from Mason Outdoor Adventure Program.

Gunston Hall
Gunston Hall is the home of our namesake, George Mason. Located in Lorton, Virginia, participants will receive an exclusive guided tour of the mansion by George Mason himself, and learn more about his life and legacy.  Participants will have the opportunity to explore the 550 acres of grounds and hiking trails.

Historic Fairfax
There is so much history to explore just down the street in Fairfax City! Learn about the founding of George Mason University, the close ties between Washington, D.C. and Fairfax, and the role Fairfax played to the CIA, the Suffragettes, and the Civil Rights movement. Participants will tour the Historic Fairfax Courthouse and view historical document as well as Old Town Hall, and other historical points within downtown Fairfax.

If you are interested in attending one of our four bus trips, register your family early as these tours fill up quickly! For more information about the Family Weekend schedule of events and to register your family, visit masonfamilyevents.gmu.edu.
