Residence Hall move-out tips and deadlines

Residence hallThis time of year can be extremely hectic as students cram for exams and arrange plans to leave campus for the summer. To help you and your student navigate this busy time, we have compiled information about move-out procedures for students living on campus. For additional information, visit housing.gmu.edu/housing-options/hall-closings.

Students are required to sign up with their Resident Advisor (RA) by April 30 at noon to establish a checkout time. Failure to meet this deadline or communicate directly with an RA about any requests for changes to the established checkout time could result in an improper checkout.

All students must move out of their on-campus housing assignment within 24 hours of their last final exam or by May 17 at noon, whichever comes first. Students seeking an exception must apply for an extended stay. The extended stay application is available on eLiving April 16 at 10 a.m.–May 4 at 11:59 p.m.

Checkout
At checkout, students will accompany the RA during a room inspection to assess damage and cleanliness. Before the scheduled checkout time, it is necessary that each room is completely clean, empty and move-in ready. This requires that students:

  • Remove all trash
  • Remove all belongings
  • Wipe down all surfaces
  • Clean all surfaces in bathrooms and kitchens (including appliances, if applicable)
  • Close and lock windows
  • Close blinds

If the student’s room is not ready at the scheduled checkout time, they may not be checked-out in accordance with procedures. This may result in being charged a cleaning, property removal or improper checkout fee. Students should attend their floor meetings or contact their RA to discuss specific checkout procedures for their neighborhood.

Parking and Loading Vehicles
If you are coming to campus to help your student move out of the residence hall, your student can go to their specified neighborhood location to get a loading pass. These one-hour loading passes will allow students and families to park in designated areas for ease of move-out. Please note that Parking and Transportation will continue to ticket vehicles that are left beyond the one-hour limit or are in a space that is not designated for move-out.

Summer School Housing
Students enrolled in Summer School Session A or B and students transitioning to Intern housing must submit an Extended Stay Request in order to remain in their current assignment until May 20 at 4 p.m. Summer school students and interns will receive detailed moving instructions to their Mason email prior to May 20. Students will move to their summer assignment on May 20 at 4 p.m.

Summer Storage Options at the UPS Store
Consider storing your student’s belonging with the Mason UPS Store this summer rather than hauling it all home and back again in August. The cost to store five 18x18x16 boxes for the summer is $275 and covers storage of the items until your student returns to campus in August. Students can sign up for this service at the UPS Store on the Fairfax campus, or online at GMUstorage.com. More information is available at fairfax-va-6272.theupsstorelocal.com.
