Residence hall move-out tips and deadlines

This time of year can be extremely hectic as students prepare for final exams and arrange plans to leave campus for the summer. To help you and your student navigate this busy time, we have compiled information about move-out procedures for students living on-campus. For additional information, visit housing.gmu.edu/housing-options/hall-closings.

This year residential students will be able to check-out of their residence hall using a convenient Express Checkout option. This will allow students and their families the opportunity to move out and finish their check-out process on any day, at any time. Each resident will be expected to attend a Residence Hall Closing floor meeting, hosted by their Resident Advisor, April 25-30 to receive all of the details. RAs will be communicating with students about these important meetings in the coming weeks.

All students must move out of their on-campus housing assignment within 24 hours of their last final exam or by Thursday, May 16 at noon, whichever comes first. Students needing to stay on-campus due to participating in commencement ceremonies or summer school housing, will need to complete the Extended Stay Application. The application will be available on the Mason Housing Portal in mid-April and will be due by Friday, May 3 at 11:59 p.m.

Express Checkout
To begin the Express Checkout process, students must first remove all of their personal belongings from their room. Residents are expected to leave their space clean and free from any trash or unwanted personal items. All student spaces will be inspected by Housing & Residence Life Staff after checkout, so student spaces not appropriately cleaned and free of trash may be subject to an excessive cleaning fee.

If there is any damage to students’ bedroom and/or common area(s) in suites and apartments, they are encouraged to speak with their RA or Resident Director prior to closing. We will work with all residents to ensure that any fees necessary to repair/replace residence hall furniture or fixtures are appropriately assessed.

Parking and Loading Vehicles
If you are coming to campus to help your student move out of the residence hall, your student can go to their specified neighborhood desk to get a loading pass. These one-hour loading passes will allow students and families to park in designated areas for ease of move-out. Please note that Parking and Transportation will continue to ticket vehicles that are left beyond the one-hour limit or are in a space that is not designated for move-out.

Summer School Housing
Students enrolled in Summer School Session A or 1 and students transitioning to Intern Housing must submit an Extended Stay Application in order to remain in their current assignment until May 19th at 4 p.m. Summer school students and interns will receive detailed moving instructions to their Mason email prior to residence hall closing. Students will move to their summer assignment on May 19 beginning at 4 p.m.

Summer Storage Options at the UPS Store
Consider storing your student’s belonging with The UPS Store this summer rather than hauling it all home and back again in August. The cost to store five 18x18x16 boxes for the summer is $285 and covers storage of the items until your student returns to campus in August. Students can sign up for this service at The UPS Store on the Fairfax campus, or online at GMUstorage.com. More information is available at fairfax-va-6272.theupsstorelocal.com.
