Spring Registration Opens Soon

Hi, Mason Families!

Well, maybe hard to believe, but it’s that time of year again – course registration for next semester. Your students have received multiple notifications from their academic department, their advisor, the Provost and even the Registrar about this, but I wanted to reach out, as a parent of a college student myself, to answer some questions that may be on your mind.

When does my student register, and what is a ‘time ticket’?

Students register in the order of graded credits achieved, in other words, students with the highest number of credits (like seniors) register first. Students are sent a ‘time ticket’ by the Registrar’s office, which is the window during which their ability to register for courses opens. You may have seen a note from the Registrar that this semester, all on-campus residential students, regardless of their total credit hours, will be permitted a small window in which to register on the first day of registration – November 6. That window is open only briefly for them at that time but will remain open for a longer time at the scheduled openings listed below. So if they happen to miss that small window on November 6, please feel free to remind them that they will have another opportunity.

How does my student know what to register for?

The best advice here is to encourage your student to meet with their academic advisor. Advisors help students navigate the course options each semester to figure out what makes the most sense for them. They are policy and curriculum experts in the various majors and a student’s best interpreter of course progression plans and requirements.

The advisors have launched email appointment campaigns reminding students of the importance of meeting with them, but it’s possible some students don’t look at their emails (right?). So if you feel that you need to prod them to connect with their advisor, you won’t hear a complaint from me. 

The websites of the various academic programs on campus also keep a copy of the ‘four-year plans’ for each major. These are suggested and not necessarily prescribed paths, but they can be helpful in showing students all of the courses that are part of the major.

Students also have at their disposal a tool in Patriot Web called ‘Degree Works’. This tool is a running tally of courses a student has completed toward their major and what courses still remain.

Some students may be very organized and keeping a record of what courses to take at what time, but even they should make a point of checking in with their advisor at least once a semester.

But what if my student doesn’t know who their advisor is?

There is a wonderful tool called the Advisor Locator that can definitely help with that. Or a student can also find information on the main website of their degree program (usually by finding the ‘academics’, ‘current student’ or ‘advising’ menu.

If that is ever not successful, the central advising leadership team can be reached at advisor@gmu.edu and are happy to help direct students who email them to the correct team.

Where does my student go to register?

Students register for courses through the Patriot Web portal. If your student is new to Mason and may not remember how to do it, there is a tutorial on the Registrar’s website, or they can get a virtual walk-through of the steps with their advisor.

When does the time ticket window close?

Students can continue to amend or update their schedules and course registrations from the start of their time tickets through the end of the add period in spring semester. In other words, a junior can make changes to their course registrations from November 9, 2020 all the way until Monday, February 1, 2021! No one recommends that a student make frequent changes – courses do have limited enrollment and will eventual fill up – but the window of opportunity may be longer than you realize.

The full spring 2021 calendar can be found on the Registrar’s website here: https://registrar.gmu.edu/calendars/spring-2021/

Once your student has gone through the registration process a few semesters in a row, it becomes very familiar for them. Always feel free to suggest they reach out for help if they need – that’s often the toughest step. We’ll get them squared away for spring!

Has Your Student Met Their Success Coach?

This fall, Mason launched its inaugural success coaching program for incoming freshmen through the Mason Care Network (MCN). Success Coaches work with students to guide and encourage the growth and development of each student’s knowledge, skills, attitudes, and beliefs about their ability succeed in higher education as well as within their chosen field. Coaching conversations include topics such as navigating university life at Mason, transitioning to college, learning about Mason resources, major fit, and career exploration.

MCN’s Success Coaches discuss all aspects of a student’s life that impacts their academic performance, including but not limited to the following 8 focus areas:

  • School community
  • Effectiveness
  • Commitment to graduation
  • Career
  • Managing commitments
  • Finances
  • Health & support
  • Academics

Mason’s Success Coaches meet with students to discuss, in depth, these 8 focus areas and how they are influencing their student experience at Mason. Success Coaches work closely with campus resources, Academic Advisors, and the student to develop success plans to enhance and improve a student’s performance and confidence in each area.

Students are encouraged to meet with their Success Coach at least once per semester. However, the most successful students will want to meet with their Success Coach 2-3 times per semester.

Freshmen students have an assigned Success Coach and Transfer students have the opportunity to opt-in to work with Peer Student Success Coaches. Students can locate their coaches via the coach finder locator:

Students can make an appointment with their Success Coach through Navigate Mason or the MCN website, mcn.gmu.edu. If you have any questions, you can email masoncn@gmu.edu or call the office at 703-993-2470.

The MCN team will host a Student Success Coaching live workshop for families on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 5 p.m. Register now at masonfamily.gmu.edu/virtual-family-initiatives/live-workshops to learn more about our coaching services. We hope to see you there!

Patriot Pride…At Your Home!

This semester has been challenging for everyone, especially for students who may be taking all online classes at their home, whether around the block in Fairfax or across the country. Contemporary Student Services and Student Involvement want to bring the Mason spirit into the community and lawns of our Mason students and families while we navigate the pandemic. Students will be able to pick up a Mason lawn sign at the On-Campus Lounge for Off-Campus Students on Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. or until supplies last. Your student must register for this event on Mason360. This will allow your student to have their sign proudly displayed for Thanksgiving, Finals, and Winter Break!

We know that some students and family members may not be able to pick up their lawn sign on this day, so we would like to gauge interest for an order for Spring 2021. Students or family members can fill out the form to let us know if you might be interested in a lawn sign in the future at https://forms.gle/sDNsHdVGLF7s4SL26.

If you have questions or ideas for how to bring Mason spirit to your student studying at home, do not hesitate to reach out to Emilie Dubert, Director of Contemporary Student Services, at edubert@gmu.edu.

Is your student on Mason 360?

Fast-paced changes caused by the pandemic can leave Patriots feeling disconnected to campus life. Mason360 is a must-have app if your student wants to know what’s happening around campus, where they can find other Patriots with similar interests, and have quick access to important resources that help them navigate their time at Mason.

The app is available in the App store and Google Play and is accessible to students only at this time. But there is a browser version (https://mason360.gmu.edu/login_only) that allows access to the event schedule for all audiences, including Mason families. Click on the events tab from the home page to find the events happening on campus.

With the Mason360 app, students can browse through the 450 student organizations which use Mason360 as their engagement tool. Patriots can also create personalized profiles and connect with other students who share similar interests via directory suggestions within the platform. With Mason360, students also get quick access to important university resources such as:

Several self-guided or interactive checklist programs, including Patriot Experience, are integrated into Mason360, further expanding the Mason Student Experience.

Mason360 is designed to enhance student engagement and resilience. It can also serve as a way for you to get an idea of the campus environment through the virtual and in-person offerings available to students.
